About choosing to study in the US (2009):"Well, I did a Shakespeare course at RADA [Royal Academy of Dramatic Art] last summer, and three quarters of the students were from abroad, mainly the United States. I started talking to them about what they were doing at their schools, and I respected the approach. Here, I feel the specification is very narrow, whereas in America, you're encouraged to be broad and choose many different subjects. For someone who has missed as much school as I have, I want to go back and discover what else there is. I always loved school-I was a proper, proper nerd. I just want that back again."

Emma Nominated for Shorty Award

Emma Watson has been nominated in this year’s Shorty Awards which “honor the best of social media by recognizing the influencers, brands and organizations on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, Instagram, Snapchat, Vine and more.” Emma is nominated in the Activism category. Fans may vote for her once per day through 18 February at the Shorty Awards website.

It only took twelve hours after actress Emma Watson’s speech launching the equal rights solidarity campaign #HeForShe at the UN Headquarters for the online death threats roll in, but, in Emma’s characteristically classy style, she used the publicity to her advantage—partnering with JP Morgan Chase, Emma got #HeForShe banners on Chase ATM screens nationwide. In 2015, her live International Women’s Day talk on Facebook garnered millions of views, and her interview with Malala Yousafzai—where Malala thanked Watson for helping her come to terms with calling herself a feminist—inspired Emma to announce on Facebook it was her “most moving day.” – from Emma’s nomination profile

Emma Starts Feminist Book Club

OurSharedShelf

Emma Watson has started a Feminist book club on the “book networking” website Goodreads. After asking fans on twitter to suggest names she chose Our Shared Shelf and her book club went live on Thursday. The ‘club’ is a public group on Goodreads, open to any registered member.

Dear Readers,

As part of my work with UN Women, I have started reading as many books and essays about equality as I can get my hands on. There is so much amazing stuff out there! Funny, inspiring, sad, thought-provoking, empowering! I’ve been discovering so much that, at times, I’ve felt like my head was about to explode… I decided to start a Feminist book club, as I want to share what I’m learning and hear your thoughts too.

The plan is to select and read a book every month, then discuss the work during the month’s last week (to give everyone time to read it!). I will post some questions/quotes to get things started, but I would love for this to grow into an open discussion with and between you all. Whenever possible I hope to have the author, or another prominent voice on the subject, join the conversation.

If you fancy it, please join up and participate. Everyone is welcome. I would be honoured!
