About Daniel and Rupert (2007): "You can't really explain to someone what this experience is like. I'm glad that we have each other. I would have been so lonely if it was just about one kid. When I was younger, they used to tease me. And now they're quite protective."

Emma’s Q&A

Emma Watson has been answer fan submitted questions for a couple of weeks now. These can be seen on Emma’s Official Website or Facebook Page. Question #5 is relevant to post here because there has been so much recent discussion in the comment section about why Emma has been accepting smaller roles. Perhaps the answer will help with a lot of the debate.

Q: Lucy in My Week with Marilyn was a small role – why haven’t you been taking lead roles recently?

A: The reason I hadn’t at that point taken on a full length part and had been doing some modelling work was because I did not have the time to dedicate to a lead role in a full length film as I have been studying for my degree. These smaller roles have also given me the time to learn a few different methods of film making. Smaller, more independent films sometimes allow more room for me to learn and grow.

I agree with Emma’s answer. The small roles that she takes gives her enough time to complete her studies as well as give her room to learn and grow. This makes more sense now as to why she takes small roles. 🙂

  2. J says:

How long has she got to finish her degree?

    • J says:

Why has no one answered this?

      • Arie says:

Because its not something we can answer. Emma doesn’t talk about her studies much. I would suggest asking this question in her Q&A. You can ask on her Facebook page. We, the staff here, only know what you know. We don’t have special information. So ask Emma herself on the Q&A!

J, I found a interview with Emma in USA today (18.July 2011). She told the interviewer, that she will spend her “2012, the last year at university”) at Brown. I do not know, if this is still correct, but maybe it’s the year 2012/2013.

        • Anonymous says:

Her senior year at Brown will be 2012-2013 as long as she is still on track, she should graduate after spring next year.

I think Emma doing nice thing she gives Important to quality of role not length of role & Education is also Important for any one so, she taken a right decision.

  4. Jonny Carinthia says:

Interaction is getting better and better…. Thanks Em, thanks Jo!

  5. alba says:

Sure, her doing small roles is her idea. It has nothing to do with the fact nobody will cast her as a leading lady in a studio picture. Come on…..

    • Jonny Carinthia says:

If I would be in charge of a great studio picture, I would not cast her as leading lady, too. Nobody will do, as long as Emma has not finished her degree and leaves university. She is – in a good sence – too obsessed with education and learning and no studioboss will face the headache, a schedule for shooting a picture, interrupted by visits for exams by the leading lady, would cause.

      ballet shoes,perks,bling ring,your voice in my head,beaty and the beast.come on….

      • Anonymous says:

Beauty in the Beast is a studio pic, if she ends up actually being in it. Nothing else you mentioned are. They are all independent flicks. Yeah, she can survive that track, since she made huge bank from HP. but she tried to get Dragon Tatoo, didnt get it. Spiderman, no way. The big leading female parts are not gonna be offered to her, not because of her education, which she has almost all but abandoned at this point, but the chick has just not proved to be a capable actor yet. Maybe she will get better, maybe these roles will convince people, but as of this moment, she has her face, and her name recognition, and she is getting the parts she is getting based on that and nothing else at this point.

        • dook says:

Dragon Tatoo was nothing more than a baseless rumor. No evidence that she was ever even interested. Spiderman? What?

She has not abandoned her education. Everything she has been doing the past few years she works around her university schedule.

Oh, and pick one name and stick with it. No using different names to make it look like people agree with you.

          • alba says:

yes, that above anon post on June 16, was me, i just forgot to type in the name.

But she has been trying to get work a bit harder than has been publicized. It is never good for one’s image to be seen looking for work and being constantly turned down. See Justin Timberlake for example.

And Dragon Tatoo, a bit more than a baseless rumour. Among other things….

          • Jonny Carinthia says:

After searching the internet I believe too and agree with Alba, that Dragon Tatoo was a little bit more then baseless rumor. It brings me back to the point, that we, the fans, will never know what’s going really on behind closed doores. We ran after the image, created by PR and media, nothing else.

Do us all a favour and exercise your right to freedom of speech somewhere else.

Emma never auditioned for dragon tattoo. Ever. If you don’t like her I’m sure there are plenty of other places to discuss it.

          • Jonny Carinthia says:

@Jenny: for my part, you cannot know how much affection I have for Emma. Never. But I learned here, that you NEVER will know exactly, what’s going on in “her real world”. All we definitly know are her pictures, her fashion and her movies. Everything else is rumor and speculation, media phantasie and fan-fiction. More we will never get. So stay cool and calm and just enjoy Emma’s talent…..

        • Joyce says:

I don’t agree with most of this, but I am forced to partially agree with the education bit.

….I’m not really convinced Emma is as dedicated to uni as she once was. She’s been moving around too often, doing too many movies, I can’t really see her getting much Uni done at this point. Perhaps she’s on a break…?

  6. Jonny Carinthia says:

    leading lady? come on, too…..

  7. SamMonkFan says:

I think Emma made a very wise decision. Honestly, I hope when she’s older, like in her mid/late twenties or thirties, she’ll get a role that will completely blow Harry Potter out of the ball park. She has the fire in her, it just hasn’t reached its full height, but when it does, I have a feeling we will all be taken by surprise. And I’m very proud of her deciding to stay in school; She’s setting a great example for all of her fans, especially the ones who have grown up with HP, they will most likely be around the same age, and hoping to do the same things. She’s kind of the reason why I became a CNA. I am deaf, and was unable to finish high school, so I went to Job Corps, to better myself, and I became a CNA, despite having a disability.

  8. Estelle says:

I agree with Emma. People shouldn’t just put her in some main roles just for the sake of box office money. She is not that kind of actress. Small roles and independent roles really show YOUR ACTING way more than big budget films. Small role or big role who cares.

  9. Jenny says:

I think shining in a smaller role shows greater acting prowess anyway. It adds an intensity to how you perform because you’ve got a less screen time to make an impact. I think it’s a great direction for Emma to go in =)

  10. Nicole says:

I agree with Emma. Smaller roles are better for her at the minute so she has lots of time to fit in her studying which is very important to her. And as she said, taking on smaller roles gives her more room to grow and learn. 🙂

  11. KS987 says:

When Emma filmed her part in My Week With Marilyn, it was during her second year at Brown as well as around the time Deathly Hallows 1 was coming out in theatres and she had to promote it, so she had to take a small role in order to be able to film anything otherwise it wouldn’t have worked out. She was barely able to even squeeze in MWWM, and as a result had to do make-up work as well as prepare for finals when she returned to Brown. Her roles in Perks and Bling Ring are larger ones though, so they haven’t all been small roles, though she had to take time off from school to be able to do them.
